January 20, 2008. Not sure where everyone else is seeing this ad today, but I saw it in my local Sunday paper, in the USA Weekend pullout. “How to get 2 free heaters” is the headline, and national toll free hotines are now open. 48 hours is your deadline to order up to 2 Amish made fireplace mantles. The online address is AmishFirePlaces.com. Most impressively, these fireplaces roll anywhere to throw an instant heat wave. No chimney, no vent, no wood, and no smoke. No kidding? At $299 each, these seem like some incredible ways to heat a room. The ad goes on to say that Amish craftsmen are under a tremendous strain (emphasis added) of the winter rush, which is the reason they are limiting this to only 2 per customer. I have no idea what these craftsmen get paid, but it sounds like a sweat shop in a wooden barn to me. I am going to protest by not ordering any…just to give a couple of these Amish folks a little break.
Lots of people are excited about NFL football today, with the AFC and NFC Championship games taking place. Probably the biggest news story is the weather in Green Bay, with people searching for things like “current temperature green bay” and “gametime temperature for packers vs. giants”. Evidently it is supposed to be in the single digits at best, so get ready for another icebowl and copious numbers of commercials for the movie called Jumper.
Lastly, quite a few Survivor fanatics are searching for the upcoming episode that will premiere on February 7th. This competition will take place at the Rocky Islands of Palau, in Micronesia. Ten ultra-fans will compete against 10 former castaways, including several from nearby Gilligans Island. I have never watched Survivor, but in the Fans versus Favorites edition, my money is on Ginger and Mrs. Howell (aka Lovey). At the same time, with a theme like Outwit, Outplay, Outlast - it’s hard to rule out the Professor!
